Buyer protection

Escrow that makes strangers safe to trade with

Buyers and sellers on social platforms transact without recourse. A nationwide financial institution had the branch network to solve that; Symph built the escrow platform that turns it into a product.

We keep this client’s name private. The client is real, and so is the system.

The challenge

Payment rails move money. They do not make a stranger trustworthy.

  1. Buyer and seller are strangers

On social and marketplace platforms, neither side has recourse if the other does not perform.

  2. The buyer pays first and hopes

Prepayment to an unknown seller is the single biggest blocker to social commerce.

  3. The seller ships first and hopes

The mirror risk stops sellers from accepting remote buyers.

  4. Escrow needs a physical layer

Holding funds is easy; confirming the item actually moved and was inspected is not.

  5. The transactions happen on other people’s platforms

The service has to work across external social and marketplace platforms, not one owned storefront.

03

How we built it

Symph worked in three steps, each one building on the last.

  1. Build the escrow transaction

The platform holds the buyer’s funds, tracks the shipment, opens an inspection window, and releases or returns funds on the outcome.

  2. Use the branch network as the trusted layer

The institution’s nationwide branches provide the physical drop-off, pickup, and payment points that online-only platforms cannot offer.

  3. Integrate into the wider ecosystem

Continuing integration work connects the escrow service to the client’s other e-commerce services, including logistics and payment collection.

04

Modules

  1. 01

    Escrow transaction

Holds buyer funds against a defined transaction between buyer and seller.

  2. 02

    Shipment and pickup tracking

Tracks the physical handoff within a defined pickup window.

  3. 03

    Buyer inspection and release

Gives the buyer an inspection step before funds are released to the seller.

  4. 04

    Coverage and fee handling

Applies the per-transaction fee and coverage ceiling.

  5. 05

    E-commerce platform integrations

Connects the escrow service into the client’s wider e-commerce and logistics services.

Delivery model

  1. 01

    Fixed-scope build, then ongoing engineering

The original platform was a defined build; integration work continues as a standing engagement.

  2. 02

    Progressive ecosystem integration

New platform and service integrations are added over time rather than all at once.

06

How it’s built

Proven architecture

The platform runs on a cloud stack built for security, reliability, and easy maintenance.

Secure by default

Encryption, strict access controls, and controlled fund release logic protect buyer and seller money. Symph follows OWASP-aligned practices and the Philippine Data Privacy Act.

AI-native delivery

Symph’s engineers build with AI coding tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex, which is a big reason integration work ships in weeks rather than months.

The result

  1. Trust without a marketplace

The service works on third-party social and marketplace platforms rather than requiring an owned storefront.

  2. End-to-end flow

Buyer payment, shipment, inspection, and release run as one transaction.

  3. A growing partnership

The first build became a continuing software engineering and platform integration engagement across the client’s e-commerce ecosystem.
